We are interested in experiments in laser-cooled atoms that utilize the wave nature of matter and coherent transient effects. Applications of this work are related to the development of portable instrumentation.
The research group has an excellent record of student involvement and a vibrant atmosphere due to the active involvement of four or five graduate students and two or three undergraduates. Students enjoy considerable freedom and flexibility during their academic careers. There is a marked emphasis on students progressing through their studies on the basis of a vigorous record of conference presentations and journal publications. Student contributions have focused on a variety of studies of light-matter interactions and precision measurements using rubidium atoms loaded into a magneto-optical trap (MOT). The typical student experience covers wide ranging topics in experimental physics including lasers, optics, analog and radio frequency electronics, acousto-optic and electro-optic devices, vacuum systems, computer interfacing, data analysis and curve fitting.
